Woodbury Woodturners

Devon Doctor wins again

Doctor Adrian Jacobs took the honours at Woodbury Woodturners 8th Annual Show on Saturday winning the John Taggart Trophy for "Best in Show" plus a first in the Class A Open Section. This is the second year in a row that Adrian has won "Best in Show" but competition was fierce and he did not get it all his own way. "The entries were outstanding" said Adrian "and I really did not expect to win. But of course I am delighted to have done so". The winning piece was a perfectly formed Yew bowl trimmed top and bottom with pewter that had been prepared and then turned by Adrian himself. "An outstanding demonstration of turning skills" was the view of the judges.

Peter Gradon from Tipton St. John won admiration from all for his model sailing boat. A work of infinite detail where every piece had been turned on a lathe. A quite remarkable piece. Bob Horlock’s vase was described as "inspirational" and Richard Clark with 2 wins showed remarkable quality for a necomer to woodturning. Most of the winning entries will be on show at Creative Crafts and Stitches at Westpoint Centre from 22nd to 25th September Stand Z44 where Woodbury Woodturners will be demonstrating. Come and see them for yourself.

On a day of mixed weather the Woodbury Hall was crowded. With 3 lathes continually demonstrating inside the hall there was plenty to entertain the visitors. Perhaps the most interest was created outside the hall where Peter Gradon had set up a home made Pole Lathe operated driven by leg power! This was a copy of the lathes used by "bodgers" in the past to turn legs for chairs and tables. There was a queue to try it.
